What is the best time of year to get a flu shot?

Remember, the influenza virus undergoes seasonal variations. Our Carrboro community can start seeing the flu as early as October and last until May, generally peaking between December and February. Therefore, we advise getting vaccinated in early fall so your body has enough time to build immunity before the flu season kicks into high gear.

That being said, flu viruses can appear and spread at various times. You might want to change when you get your immunization if you live in a place where the flu epidemic begins sooner or later than usual. Vaccination before the flu season is even more important if you have a compromised immune system or specific underlying medical conditions to optimize your protection.

While the best time to get a flu shot is before the end of October, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial and offer protection against the flu. We encourage you to consult with our healthcare providers to discuss the best time for you to receive your flu vaccine, considering your personal health status and local flu activity.

When is it recommended to receive the flu vaccine?

September through October is the ideal time of year to be vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is before the peak of influenza activity and other allergy-related concerns, allowing your body to develop protective antibodies before the virus begins to circulate widely.

However, if you miss the optimal vaccination window, don’t worry. It’s still beneficial to get vaccinated later, even into January or later. The influenza virus can remain active and spread until late spring.

Please note that the immunity provided by the flu vaccine can decline over time. This is why it might not protect you throughout the entire flu season if you get vaccinated early in the year.

We pay special attention to certain individuals, including our healthcare workers, those in close contact with high-risk individuals, pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions, those living in long-term care homes, as well as youngsters younger than nine who are getting the vaccine for the initial time. These individuals should ideally get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year.

While the vaccine does not guarantee complete protection against influenza, It dramatically lowers the chance of mortality, hospitalization, and severe disease. We encourage our patients to discuss the timing of the flu vaccine with our healthcare providers to ensure maximum protection.

Is getting a flu shot safe if I’m sick or have a fever?

If you’re experiencing a mild to moderate illness or a low-grade fever, receiving a flu shot can still be beneficial. It can help protect you from further complications or worsening of symptoms caused by the influenza virus.

However, if you have a severe illness, high fever, or symptoms such as a persistent cough or sore throat, we typically advise against getting a flu shot. Here’s why:

● Weakened Immune System: When you are seriously ill, your immune system is already fighting off the infection. Getting a vaccine could put more strain on your immune system, potentially decreasing the vaccine’s effectiveness.
● Risk of Side Effects: Minor side effects from the flu vaccine, such as pain or redness where the injection was made could be exacerbated if you’re already experiencing symptoms of another illness.
● False Positives: A high fever could interfere with the temperature screening often required prior to receiving a flu shot.
If you’re in this situation, it’s best to:
● Wait until you recover: If you’re dealing with a severe illness or high fever, it’s advisable to postpone getting a flu shot until you’ve recovered.
● Consult with doctor: If you’re unsure about whether it’s safe to get a flu shot while sick, our healthcare providers can assess your condition and provide personalized advice based on your health situation.

There can be exceptions, especially for high-risk individuals and during outbreak situations.

We also want to emphasize that the flu shot is not a treatment for the flu. If you’re experiencing flu-like symptoms, we advise you to consult with one of our healthcare providers for proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, while the flu vaccine can cause mild side effects, it cannot cause the flu.

How well does the flu vaccine work in preventing the flu?

We strongly advocate for the regular administration of the flu vaccine. Its effectiveness in preventing influenza varies each year and among different age and risk groups, due to changing strains of influenza viruses. However, studies have consistently shown that vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of developing the flu.

Influenza Vaccine Efficacy at Our Center

The efficacy of the flu vaccine is monitored by comparing the proportion of vaccinated individuals who develop laboratory-confirmed influenza to unvaccinated individuals. We’ve noticed that the flu vaccine works best among our healthy adult patients and older children.

Factors Affecting Vaccine Efficacy

Several factors influence flu vaccine efficacy, including:

● Match between the vaccine and circulating strains: The effectiveness of the vaccine depends on the match between the strains in the vaccine. Our medical professionals keep a close watch on the predicted strains for the upcoming flu season and ensure that patients are vaccinated accordingly.
● Age and overall health: Our younger, healthier patients typically respond to the vaccine with a stronger immune system, which increases its effectiveness. However, even for our patients who are older or have certain chronic illnesses, the flu vaccine still may provide some protection.
● Time of vaccination: We recommend getting the flu vaccine before the flu season begins.
● Consistency of vaccination: We recommend annual vaccination to ensure continued protection.

Protection Against Severe Outcomes

The vaccine can significantly lessen the impact of the flu, even if it cannot prevent the sickness.

At Carrboro Family Medicine Center, we consistently encourage and provide vaccinations to significantly reduce the risk of our patients developing the flu or experiencing severe outcomes. Regular annual vaccination is recommended for all our patients at risk of influenza infection. To consult our professionals, please contact us or book an appointment online.
